Developed in connection with the Garden Futures: Designing with Nature exhibition; this gorgeous exclusive scarf extends the ideas behind Alice-Marie Archer’s Repairing the Riverbank — a large-scale knitted geotextile quilt commissioned by V&A Dundee.

Like the original artwork, the scarf explores how craft, plant science, and community collaboration can work together to support ecological restoration. Its patterns draw from traditional Fair Isle and Sanquhar designs, reinterpreted to represent native Scottish riparian plants that can help stabilise the riverbank and nurture biodiversity along Dundee’s Dighty Burn.

Double-knitted in 100% pure, undyed Shetland wool — sourced directly from Shetland Wool Brokers - this heritage yarn recreates the original characteristics of handspun 'wursit' replicated from garments in the collections of the Shetland Museum and Archives; and results in a fine, soft handle with natural warmth and resilience.

Each motif celebrates the intertwined strength of culture and ecology — a reminder that repair begins with connection: between hands, habitats, and histories.

The scarves are knitted with care in the UK by Sean-Henry Fitzsimons for Alice-Marie Archer.

Product details

  • Size: 33 cm wide x 176 cm long
  • Material: 100% pure wool yarn from Shetland created in a special heritage weight to reflect traditional yarn for fair-isle
  • Made in UK
  • Care: Hand wash (water should be no higher than 20 degrees) or Use a cool wool cycle with mild detergent. Reshape while damp and dry flat, away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not tumble dry or wring. Occasional airing will refresh the natural wool fibres.
  • End of life: When, after many years of wear, your scarf reaches the end of its journey, you can return it to the soil. Made entirely from undyed wool, it will naturally decompose — enriching the earth and acting as a gentle weed barrier in your garden.
