A fantastic knitting book from the fair island of Fair Isle. Discover the distinctive colours and patterns of traditional Fair Isle knitwear with Knitting from Fair Isle by Mati Ventrillon.

Mati Ventrillon moved from London to Fair Isle, one of the Shetland islands back in 2007 and since then her passion for knitting and her determination drove her to launch the Fair Isle Knitwear website and apply for the 2012 Crafted UK business mentoring programme in an attempt to fulfil her dreams of a ‘made in Fair Isle label’.

Her inspiration comes from the technique of creating patterns with multiple colours that was first used by the women of Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands, more than two centuries ago. Her designs, which have featured on the Chanel catwalk, are inspired by tradition but use her own modern interpretation of colour and pattern arrangement.

This paperback knitting book includes patterns for a varied collection of garments and accessories, from fisherman-style jumpers and a poncho to scarves, cowls, fingerless gloves, wrist warmers and traditional Fair Isle hats known as keps.

With designs inspired by the landscape and knitting heritage of the Shetland Islands, this is an inspiring practical book for knitters interested in colourwork, Scottish craft and contemporary Fair Isle design.

  • Fisherman-style jumpers with high, crew and slash necklines
  • Poncho
