As part of our Design and Disability exhibition range with our friends at gaada, we’re delighted to bring you Struan’s Sayings - a series of beautifully bright, riso-printed badges by Shetland-based artist Struan Haswell. Tired of explaining yourself? Let everyone know with this informative “Too hard to explain” badge.

Characterised by the pairing of his “no-nonsense” drawing style with hopeful, humorous (and often profound) statements, Struan’s Sayings capture all the warmth, wit and distinctive charm of his work.

Meet the maker: Struan Haswell is a visual artist, volunteer zookeeper and member of the Toogs Artist Workshop — a neurodiverse creative community and making space in Burra Isle, Shetland. One of the many talented artists supported through gaada, Struan’s work explores his deep interest in observing both the human and natural world. His weekly studio practice often begins with making lists that gather moments of intrigue and perplexity, which he then develops through drawing and printmaking. Toogs Artist Workshop forms part of gaada, an artist-led social enterprise providing resources, opportunities and support for artists across Shetland.
